Issues certified copies of
birth and death records for events that occurred in the state of
California from 1905 onwards. Maintains a central registry of
marriages and divorces. Processing times for vital records vary.
For faster processing times, submit your request directly to the
County Recorder's Office in the county where the event occurred.
At this time, vital records can only be requested by mail.

Certified copies of birth
records can only be obtained by authorized individuals.
Record Type: Death
| Dates: Since July 1905 | Cost: $12.00
Certified copies of death
records can only be obtained by authorized individuals.
Record Type: Marriage
| Dates: 1949-1986, 1998-1999 | Cost: $14.00
State Office only maintains
records for the dates above. Records falling before, in-between
or after these dates must be obtained directly from the County
Recorder's Office in the county where the marriage licence was
first issued. Confidential marriage records (available only to
those named on the certificate) must be obtained from the County
Clerk/Recorder as well.
Record Type: Divorce
| Dates: 1962 - June 1984 | Cost: $13.00
State Office can only issue a
certificate of record containing name of parties, county filed,
and court case number; and only for divorces occurring between
1962 and June 1984. Actual certified copies of divorce records
must be obtained directly from the Superior Court in the county
where the divorce was granted.

California Birth Index (1905-1995) - Searchable online
index useful for verifying a birth event. Can be searched by
first name, last name, sex, birth date, as well as county of
birth.
California Death Records (1940-1997) - Index contains
over 9 million records and is searchable by given name, surname,
mother's maiden name, father's last name, sex, birth place and
year, and death place and year. Database has been provided by
the California Department of Health Services, Office of Health
Information and Research, Vital Statistics Section.
