Vital records for events
occurring within the state of Louisiana are restricted and only
available to certain individuals, until such time they are
archived, becoming public records available to everyone.
Currently, birth records become public records after 100 years,
and death and marriage records become public records after 50
years. If the record you are searching for is for an event that
occurred 100 or more years ago, or 50 or more years ago
depending on the type of record, visit the
Louisiana State Archives.

Birth records are restricted
for 100 years, and can only be obtained by the person named on
the certificate, spouse, parent, grandparent, grandchild or
adult child or sibling of the person named on the certificate.
Photo ID required with requests.
Record Type: Death

Death records are restricted
for 50 years, and can only be obtained by spouse, parent,
grandparent, grandchild or adult child or sibling of the person
named on the certificate. A record can also be obtained by the
beneficiary of an insurance policy of the person named on the
document. Photo ID required with requests.

Louisiana Vital Records
Registry may only issue a certified copy of a marriage license
purchased in Orleans Parish. If the marriage license was
purchased in another parish, you must obtain a certified copy
from the Clerk of Court's office in that parish. Records older
than 50 years can be obtained from the State Archives.
Record Type: Divorce

Office cannot issue a certified
copy of a divorce decree. You must obtain a certified copy of a
divorce decree from the Clerk of Court's office in the parish
where the divorce was granted.

Louisiana Secretary of State: Death Records - Service
only issues certified copies of microfilmed death certificates
for deaths that occurred in Louisiana between 1911–1956. The
database also contains older death records for some parishes,
such as deaths that occurred in Jefferson parish before 1911,
and deaths that occurred in Orleans parish as early as 1804.
Microfilmed death certificates may not be available for many of
these older records. Basic and advanced search available.
