The Division of Vital Records
is responsible for maintaining vital information pertaining to
birth, deaths, marriages and divorces that have occurred in the
state of South Carolina. Vital records are restricted in the
state of South Carolina and, by law, only certain individuals
are eligible to request copies of certain vital records. The
division has birth and death records dating back to 1915 and
marriage and divorce records dating back to 1950 and 1962,
respectively.
Record Type: Birth
| Dates: Since January 1, 1915 | Cost: $12.00
Records are restricted and can
only be obtained by the person named on the record (if over 18),
parent or guardian, or legal representative. Immediate family
can request a record, but only if the person named on the birth
record is deceased.
Record Type: Death
| Dates: Since January 1, 1915 | Cost: $12.00
Records are restricted and can
only be obtained by immediate family, legal representative, or
by those who can prove a direct and tangible relationship with
the person named on the record.
Record Type: Marriage
| Dates: Since July, 1950 - August 2009 | Cost: $12.00
Records prior to and after
these dates can be obtained directly from the Probate Court in
the county where the event occurred.
Record Type: Divorce
| Dates: Since July, 1962 - December 2008 | Cost: $12.00
Records prior to and after
these dates can be obtained directly from the Clerk of Court in
the county where the event occurred.
