Vital records can be requested
in-person or by mail (which takes longer). The Office of Vital
Records maintain over 7 million vital records for events that
occurred within the state of Virginia. Birth and death records
are restricted in Virginia and only available to immediate
family members only- mother, father, husband, wife, child,
brother, sister and grandparents with valid ID. Birth records
can be issued to the legal guardian with proof of custody
papers. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, etc. cannot obtain a
Vital Record.

Birth records are restricted
for 100 years before they become public records. Only the cities
of Hampton, Newport News and Norfolk have records between 1896
and June 14, 1912. Records can only be obtained by certain
individuals (see Additional Information).
