The Vital Registration Office
is a division of the West Virginia Health Statistics Center. The
state office maintains vital records for events (births, deaths
and marriages) that occurred in the state of West Virginia.
Vital records can be requested in-person, by phone or by mail.
Processing times vary. Records in West Virginia are restricted
and only available to certain individuals (see the
Health Statistics
Center for more information).
Record Type: Birth
| Dates: Since January 1917 | Cost: $12.00
For earlier records, write to
Clerk of County Court in county where event occurred. Records
are restricted and only available to certain individuals. This
is typically the registrant, immediate family or legal
representative.
Record Type: Death
| Dates: Since January 1917 | Cost: $12.00
For earlier records, write to
Clerk of County Court in county where event occurred. Records
are restricted and only available to certain individuals. This
is typically immediate family or legal representative.
Record Type: Marriage
| Dates: Since 1921 | Cost: $12.00
Records available from 1921
onwards. Certified copies available from 1964 onwards. Records
can also be obtained from the County Clerk in the county where
the marriage license was issued.
Record Type: Divorce
| Dates: Since 1968 (Index Only) | Cost: $5.00
State office doesn't maintain
divorce records. Fee is for search and verification only.
Certified copies of divorce records are available from the Clerk
of Circuit Court or the Chancery Side in the county where the
divorce was granted.
